Plant of the week – Myrrh

Many people are familiar with Myrrh from the Biblical story of the birth of Jesus. He was brought gifts of Frankincense (coming soon in plant of the week!), Gold, and … Myrrh! Buy why are these plants compared with gold, are they really so valuable?

Well, Yes!

Myrrh is not truly an essential oil, it is actually a tree resin, similar to maple sap. It is extracted from the trees by slashing the tree, and as the resin hardens, it is actually referred to as myrrh tears.

It is no wonder that Myrrh was historically considered as valuable as gold – before the days of pharmaceuticals, the variety of benefits a substance like myrrh had to offer was valuable indeed!

Myrrh is believed to have antiseptic and anti inflammatory properties – meaning it helps “kill” microbes and sooth inflamed tissues. It is known to soothe mucous membranes in particular, and stimulating healthy mucous production, making it an effective expectorant. Studies have shown that at least one of the oils in myrrh promotes easier breathing.

Maybe that’s why I feel like I breathe so much better when I use a blend essential oils, including myrrh, on my chest when my allergies are bad!

The Bible also mentions Jesus rejecting wine with myrrh in it while he was being put to death. Why would he do this? The thought is that he didn’t want anything that would relieve his pain – indicating the power of myrrh as a pain reliever!

Myrrh is a powerful substance, and is typically not known to be safe during pregnancy or if heavy menstrual bleeding is a problem. Also, it should be noted that it is most beneficial when diluted, and in formulas with other herbs, which is why it is so commonly found with frankincense!

Along with being wonderful for soothing inflamed tissue, some other benefits associated with myrrh:

  • Myrrh has many antioxidant compounds, meaning it neutralizes “free radical” damage in the body.
  • It supports the body’s ability to “kill” bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other pathogens.
  • It contributes to balanced hormones.
